Are CVs in danger of becoming extinct?
Several recruitment experts now believe that the humble CV is on the verge of extinction and furthermore, believe the process is irreversible. Some predict that in a few years the traditional CV will cease to exist and the only people mourning the day will be those that have not developed their 'personal brand'!
So, what is the reasoning behind this prediction? * It is static Imagine this scenario: two graduates from the same University are applying for the same position. You are the employer, you have no time to interview and you receive two very similar CVs from what you assume are two intelligent applicants. Who do you employ? How do you employ? You may resort to flipping a coin. That's fair, right?
If you search their names online you may land on their blogs, reading these will give you an idea on their train of thought as content is the key here. If you search LinkedIn you can see what others say about them. Do they come recommended? Is this praise 'generic' or do others care enough to comment on their personal brand? What books do they read, how is their network built, etc? Follow their Tweets and discover if they're earning the attention of others with similar interests. Essentially, they've become something of a brand, promoting more of a 360 degree view of themselves and answering such questions as:
* Who are you? Based on a recent study in the A well developed personal brand can allow an employers' choice to be better informed and can help some candidates stand out from others. Yes, you may lack certain qualifications etc, so demonstrate your desirable personality instead. So, will CVs ever be rendered 100% obsolete?
In face of the above reasoning it's certainly possible, but this writer thinks not. It is a universally requested, accepted and recognized document. What do you think; can you imagine a world without the CV? For more information on personal branding:
Why might the CV fade out? Here are a few reasons:
* It limits personalisation
* It does not convey any character
* It is biased - you are the author!
* It only shows one side of you
* It is boring (we disagree)
* What makes you unique?
* What do others see when they look at you?
