Good People @ Jun 21, 2011
Poor body language can ruin an interview no matter how suited your qualifications and experience. What you say verbally is only part of communication how you say plays a big role in it as well. Impressions can be made of you within seconds of you entering the building. Here are some body language tips you should try and some you should avoid:

Body Language To Avoid

- If you are told to wait in the reception do not sit with your legs stretched out, feet
crossed and hands clasped behind your head, this can signal a casual attitude bordering on indifference.

- Do not hold your handbag or briefcase to your chest this shows you to be a nervous and confident candidate

- Never cross your arms when in an interview this looks like you are being defensive or worse hostile.

- Too firm a grip can imply arrogance but too limp handshake suggests you to be nervous and panicky.

- Try not to touch you or mess with your hair face when talking this implies that you are lying or with holding information.

Body language to try

- In the interview do not sit back against the chair instead lean forward slightly this shows interest it what the other person is saying.

- Try to look the interviewer in the eye. This again shows interest however try not to go to far and just stare and them which can make them uncomfortable.

- If you are unsure of what to do with your hands, rest them, loosely clasped in your lap or on the table.

- Tilting your head very slightly to one side comes across as friendly and open. Keeping it straight comes across as self-assured and authoritative.

- Try to match your interviewer's body language and mood, this can help you to quickly build a rapport with them. Make sure you're subtle though, or you may cause alarm.
