Bolton Stats – Some Useful Facts

We recently came across some useful facts about Bolton. Did you know all of these?

 

1. It is the fifth largest employment centre in the north west of England.
2. Borough population is 262,400.
3. The borough is divided into 20 wards each of which elects three councillors (60 seats in total).
4. Bolton's Victorian Town Hall, dominates the town centre and it was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1873. The Grade Two star listed building has a 61m high clock tower.
5. Bolton is only 13 miles from Manchester city centre and 22 miles from Manchester Airport.
6. Samuel Crompton invented the spinning mule in 1779 in Bolton which revolutionised cotton spinning.
7. As well as cotton spinning it was an important engineering and paper bleaching town.
8. Bolton Wanderers formed in 1874.
9. There are around 426 hectares of parks.
10. The town's famous sons and daughters include comedian Peter Kay, DJ Sara Cox, actress Maxine Peake, boxer Amir Khan, TV personality Johnny Ball and the late Fred Dibnah (steeplejack).
