Speculative letters

Good People @ Feb 14, 2011

Speculative letters are another path you can take to employment. Speculative letters are letters that you write to a company asking if they have a position open for someone like you. These letters can be very effective because they can save companies time and money in advertising jobs however these must be done right to get you that interview.

As said above these letters can be very effective but don't get me wrong most of these letters you send off are not going to be responded too. But if you find that one business that does have an opening and they think you could fill it there will be little to no competition for that post.

When writing a speculative letter always try to write it to a named person, not dear Sir or Madam. This will not only help your letter go to the right person but also be more compelling to dead with their name on it. Doing research before hand will get you the name of the HR manger or a phone number you can ring to ask for the person's name.

In your opening paragraph you should say what type of work you are interested in. Also explain why you would like to work for their company, the more detail here the better as one line on the company will do you no good again research here will help. You do not want to come across as push or demanding when asking if they have a opening as this will get your letter thrown straight into the bin.

The main body of your letter should have why they should hire you. You will want to highlight your relevant skills and experience as well as your achievements. Tell them what they will be getting if they hire you.

In your closing paragraph you should thank them for their time as well as mentioning that you have enclosed a copy of your CV with the letter. Sign off with yours sincerely and sign your name above your printed name with your current job title underneath (miss out if you don't have one) this gives your letter a professional look.

By writing a good speculative letter, you are displaying initiative, a major quality all employers look for. This will give your application a boost and a greater chance to get that interview.

Speculative letters do take a lot of work. I have send out 20 letters and only got 1 reply.

I never tried speculative letters before, as I thought that it was a waste of time but after reading this I might give it a try.
